Maximising the impact of Culture Box through the arts and professional training

Culture Box was a research project conducted by the University of Exeter and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The project has begun a new life with an AHRC grant to extend the impact and activities of the project.
Beyond Culture Box aims to create new and engaging creative resources for diverse audiences to stimulate public interest in dementia, which involves producing a touring exhibition based on the data from the research project and new artist commissions. The project will also be involved in knowledge exchange activities with our stakeholders, including a training workshop for those interested in activity provision for dementia. The project will use participatory workshops to co-curate the exhibition and co-design the workshops. These workshops will be developed and delivered in partnership with Arts4Dementia, Culture&, and NAPA.

Trees - being outdoors in nature surrounded by and bathed in green beauty has been a saviour each day as I took every opportunity to escape my ‘domestic prison’ during the various lockdowns. This was at the forefront of my mind when I was invited by Professor Victoria Tischler to be visual arts lead on the Culture Box study. A desire to find a way to create a sense of space and freedom for the participants to connect with nature, their support workers and each other through the activities that brought ‘the outside in’. The artist Martin Jordan was commissioned to paint a series of trees chosen by the CB team to mark each month of the project and provide activities to accompany them. Here is the beautiful Eucalyptus tree from Australia the third of a series of paintings of trees designed to mark each month’s Culture Box. They will be part of an activity that the person living with dementia and their carer will be offered as a vehicle to promote connection and help alleviate feelings of isolation during these times of lockdown.
